Custom build process

If you are looking for something custom we can help you determine the best style, size, wood and finish for your situation. Contact Lisa by email or phone and she will be happy to talk (or meet with you in person) to start the process. Providing pictures of furniture you like, or the look you are going for, is a great way to get started. Once we finalize the details you will receive plans with dimensions and details for your approval.

We require a 50% deposit when the plans are accepted and the remaining 50% at delivery. The deposit holds your place in our production schedule.

When you place your order we will give you an approximate completion timeframe and delivery will be scheduled once the piece has been finished. If you like we will even send photos of your piece in various stages of the process.

Wood Selection and building process

Wood Selection

Every piece we build starts with selection of rough cut kiln dried boards from local sawmills in Ohio. Our preferred woods to work with are White Oak, Walnut, Ash and Pine but we can get any type of wood you request from local sawmills.

White Oak, Walnut and Ash are dense woods and make very durable tables and furniture. Oak and Walnut are premium hardwoods and therefore are more expensive than Ash. If you are looking for an option that is less expensive Ash is a durable light colored wood with a fairly straight grain. Pine is popular option for those who want solid wood furniture but don't want to pay the higher price for a premium hardwood. While pine is not as hard as Walnut or Oak it is still a much better investment than funiture made of MDF and laminate.

Milling and Assembly

Each board is milled using jointer, planers and saws to get it to the correct thickness, length and width for each individual project. The planing process is our favorite part because it's when you get to see the unique beauty of the grain in each board.

From there the milled pieces are cut, shaped and assembled by hand. The final step in the assembly process is sanding. All pieces are sanded to the appropriate grit prior to finishing.

Completion Timeline and Delivery

When you place your order we will give you an approximate completion timeframe and delivery will be scheduled once the piece has been finished. If you like we will even send photos of your piece in various stages of the process.

Finishing

After trying many stains and clearcoats we recommend Rubio Monocoat to our customers because we feel it's the best option to bring out the natural beauty of the wood grain. Rubio Monocoat is a Belgian hard wax oil that is 100% VOC free. It protects the wood from everyday life wear and tear and the matte finish helps maintain a natural look.Rubio Monocoat was initially developed as a product to seal and protect hardwood floors so it does a great job at protecting furniture.

You can maintain your table over time by sanding back small areas and ordering a sample container of the color from Rubio Monocoat then re-appling a touch up. This is much less work and hassle than needing to sand back to bare wood and recoat the entire table.

We recommend a wet soapy rag for everyday cleaning. Spills should be wiped up immedietly and using harsh chemicals can wear down the finish.

Every piece of furniture has unique grain patterns and variations in color. Therefore we can't guarantee exact stain matches to images on our website or tables we have done in the past. While we prefer to use Rubio Monocoat (Rubio Monocoat is offered in over 50 colors) we can finish custom pieces with almost any stain. Due to the variations in wood we do not guarantee stain matching to existing furniture. If you have a specific color or stain in mind please provide the brand and name of the color.

What to expect when buying handcrafted furniture

Wood is living, breathing material and it ages over time like any natural material. Solid wood has characteristics which can include knots, variations in grain, and color differences. We purchase wood that has been dried for furniture use and use building techniques to allow for wood movement which helps reduce expansion and warping, but some natural movement is to be expected, especially when seasons change or there are drastic environment changes.

Natural character includes cracks within the wood, knots, as well as grain and pigment variations. Variations in height, width or depth for all pieces may vary by as much as one inch. This does not interfere with the structural integrity of the piece, but instead give each piece its unique character.

Our products are handmade and hand-finished, variations in the wood or metal are to be expected and celebrated. Each item is unique and no two are exactly alike. We take pride in knowing that every piece of furniture we create is unique and hand crafted to our customers specifications.

Refunds and Warranty

We stand behind the products we build and offer a 6 month warranty on our furniture. Our warranty covers manufacturing defects in regards to products not functioning correctly. Examples include: wobbly legs or joints, drawers not closing or opening correctly or the rare event that the piece is not build to the agreed upon dimensions.

All Sales are Final - Including Deposits

Due to the custom nature of our furniture we do not offer returns or refunds of deposits or final payments for orders. We strive for 100% customer satisfaction and we will glady work with you to fix or change what you don't like about the piece.

Shipping/Delivery

We started Pure Grain Table Co. to provide custom quality built furniture to our local community. To accomplish this we don't currently provide shipping, or delivery, outside of the central Ohio area.

We offer free delivery on all orders within our delivery area. Feel free to contact us to find out if you are within our delivery area (Typically within 30 miles of Columbus).

Because we don’t ship nationwide like a lot of the larger online companies we don’t have to spend our time (and added expenses) worrying about packing and shipping orders.
